Homemade Instant Oatmeal Mix
A healthy homemade breakfast alternative that's delicious too! Oats, raw honey, dried fruit, and ground cinnamon are all associated with myriad health benefits like antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, etc. Many pre-made oatmeals are packed with sugars. Homemade oatmeal gives you the chance to sweeten it with healthier options like syrup or raw honey.
Method:
Mix the dry milk, ground cinnamon, and salt first. You can mix in a bowl or shaker bottle.
Get 8 small food containers, mason jars, sealable food bags, etc. Put 1/2 cup of oats in each container, add 2 tablespoons of the powder mix, 1 tablespoon of raw honey (or syrup if you prefer), and about 1/4 cup of dried fruit.
If you're mixing in a jar, it looks nice to layer them. If you layer in the fruit first, then the honey, oats, and powder, it's easier to cook in the jar.
If you're mixing in a bag to take camping, you'll want to quickly fold the honey into the mix so it doesn't stick to the bag.
To cook, boil about 1 cup of water and slowly pour the water over the oatmeal. If the water just covers the oatmeal, the result will be a medium thickness. More water will make runnier oatmeal and less water will make thicker oatmeal. Adjust to taste.
It takes about 1.5 to 2 minutes to boil 1 cup of water in the microwave.
